HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — A major road construction project in Waynesville is reshaping one of Haywood County’s busiest corridors, and some local business owners say the work has made it harder for customers to reach them.
The $42.8 million Russ Avenue improvement project, led by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), stretches about 1.2 miles from U.S. 74 to Main Street. It’s designed to make the area safer and more efficient for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while also replacing aging infrastructure beneath the road.
“NCDOT is improving Russ Avenue for a wide variety of reasons to improve the transportation system for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists,” said David Uchiyama, communications manager for NCDOT. “Also included in this project are major stormwater and sewer upgrades. This project has benefits for everybody in the area, whether they’re drivers or people who use the utility systems in Waynesville.”…
