Part of I-40 in western NC could soon have toll lane to help with congestion

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – A toll lane or “managed lane” has been proposed to help with congestion on I-40 in Buncombe and Haywood counties.

The French Broad River Metropolitan Planning Organization held a meeting where they discussed possibly creating a managed lane as part of a possible I-40 widening project. It would go from exit 44 near Monte Vista Road in Buncombe County through exit 27 in Haywood County.

“Managed lanes are special highway lanes where traffic flow is actively controlled, often using tolls, to keep vehicles moving reliably,” officials said. “They give drivers the option to pay for a faster trip, while carpoolers and buses may use them for free, helping reduce congestion in the regular lanes.”

No final decisions have been made…
