Man accused of possessing weapon of mass destruction in McDowell County

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office reports arresting a man on Saturday who was in possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Officials said a deputy was conducting a property check at a residence in Marion when he saw several monofilament strands stretched across the road in front of 52-year-old Joe Cooper’s residence.

The monofilament was connected to a device pointed toward the road. An investigation by the sheriff’s office, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined it to be a destructive explosive device, officials said.

Cooper was charged with three counts of felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction, felony possession of a firearm by felon, misdemeanor resisting a public officer and misdemeanor assaulting a government official…
