Man sentenced in 2024 shooting that injured three workers in Yancey County

BURNSVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The District Attorneys’ Office for the Thirty-Fifth Prosecutorial District of North Carolina officially sentenced a man in a 2024 Yancey County shooting after he pleaded guilty on Oct. 30.

Lucas Wilson Murphy pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and four counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm.

On July 24, 2024, tree workers were conducting maintenance in a remote part of Yancey County when they met Murphy, who was living in a cabin on his father’s property. When later interviewed by law enforcement, the workers indicated that their conversations with Murphy had been civil and non-confrontational.

The district attorney’s office said that, unprovoked, Murphy left his cabin, shot at the workers, hitting and seriously injuring three of them. Murphy continued to stalk the victims through the woods until deputies arrived. Murphy also fired at the deputies as they approached, but eventually surrendered and was taken into custody after deputies shot him…
