Understanding cold weather alerts as arctic air arrives

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Cold weather alerts are being issued across parts of the United States as confidence grows that Arctic air will bring dangerously cold conditions to much of the country. These alerts from the National Weather Service help communicate increasing levels of cold-related risk and give people time to prepare.

A Cold Weather Advisory is issued when cold air or wind chills are expected but are not extreme. While not usually life-threatening, prolonged exposure can still lead to hypothermia or frostbite.

An Extreme Cold Watch means dangerously cold temperatures or wind chills are possible within the next 12 to 48 hours, though timing and location may still change…
