Man avoids jail time for theft of Helene donations from Swannanoa

A Florida physician pleaded guilty to stealing over $12,000 in items donated for Hurricane Helene relief.

Posing as a volunteer for a nonprofit, Mark Anthony Smith stole donated disaster relief supplies from the Swannanoa area, including camping stoves, heaters, propane tanks and generators. Deputies later recovered these items at a local pawn shop where Smith had sold them for cash.
