Ben’s Backdraft BBQ rises from food truck to community hub after Helene

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Businesses across western North Carolina were shut down by Helene, with first responders working day and night to help their communities.

One Waynesville firefighter, along with his family, stepped in to feed those in need, now returning that love for doing so more than a year after the storm.

“I’ve always been crazy about everything firefighter related,” said Ben Hooper, volunteer firefighter and owner of Ben’s Backdraft BBQ. “And when I turned 16 and was old enough to be a junior firefighter at Saunook Fire Department in west Waynesville. I joined, kind of the rest has been history.”…
