NC crews battle 20-acre wildfire near Lake Lure, Chimney Rock

Firefighters are battling a 20-acre blaze near the Rutherford County village of Chimney Rock that ignited on New Year’s Eve, officials said.

At about 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, the town of Lake Lure began investigating a fire reported by “numerous people,” according to a Jan. 1 news release from Broad River Fire & Rescue. Firefighters from Broad River and Chimney Rock responded to Shumont Mountain at 905 Bald Mountain Road.

Heavy tree blow down was fueling the fire, endangering one structure, the fire department said early in the morning Jan. 1. Firefighters responded to that portion of the fire, preventing damages to the home.
