North Carolina eases access to adoptive birth certificates for many adoptees

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — The state of North Carolina has implemented a new law making it easier for adoptees to obtain a copy of their adoptive birth certificate. Previously, individuals had to go through a central office in Raleigh.

As of Jan. 1, adoptees can now request a certified copy from the county where the adoption took place. This change applies to anyone born in 1971 or later.

Haywood County’s Register of Deeds, Sherri Rogers, described the change as “a step forward for adoptees,” but noted that it does not include access to a person’s original birth certificate…
