$800K landslide stabilization assessment at Grovemont begins using FEMA funds

SWANNANOA, N.C. (WLOS) — Asheville geotechnical firm Engineering Consulting Services (ECS) Southeast is moving forward with a nearly $800,000 landslide stabilization assessment contract for nine slides that impacted the Grovemont neighborhood, killing two in 2024 in Swannanoa.

ECS Southeast confirmed to News 13 on Monday, Jan. 5, that 71 letters went out to parcel owners around the slide areas requesting permission for land access as analysis of the site begins.

“It’s a very exciting first step,” said Terri Wells, Buncombe County Commissioner. “With so many members living down below where these landslides happened.”…
