Ex-Buncombe bailiff indicted after allegedly lying during murder trial

ASHEVILLE – A fired Buncombe County bailiff and former detective was indicted Jan. 5 on a perjury charge after he allegedly lied under oath while a judge questioned him about comments he made to a split jury during a first-degree murder trial in Asheville, records show.

Christopher “Matt” Plowucha turned himself into the Buncombe County Detention Facility at 1:17 p.m. Jan. 12, sheriff spokesperson Matt Marshall told the Citizen Times. He was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond, Marshall said.

A copy of his indictment alleges Plowucha, 47, of Weaverville, falsely told the judge under oath that “he did not share information regarding the split of the jury to other people in the courthouse,” knowing that the statement was false. An order for Plowucha’s arrest was issued Jan. 6, according to court records…
