Waynesville man’s D.C. Desert Storm Memorial dream comes true; Honor Flights plan to visit

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLOS) — In 2009, Waynesville’s Scott C. Stump was a guardian for a veteran for one of the Blue Ridge Honor Flights, and what he saw was inspiring.

“He told me he was so moved by all the veterans getting to see the memorials, and he mentioned how there wasn’t a memorial for Desert Storm,” Blue Ridge Honor Flight founder Jeff Miller told News 13 on Jan. 12.

Earl Morse started the flights in private planes in 2005, taking veterans to see the war memorials in Washington, D.C. A year later, Hendersonville’s Miller enhanced the idea in a major way – with charter flights. Those flights first began just out of Asheville Regional Airport but quickly expanded. Now the Honor Flight Network has 128 active hubs that fly from 46 states…
