State agents investigating after inmate dies at WNC jail

An inmate at the Buncombe County Detention Facility has died from what has been described as an “unknown medical condition”.

The Sheriff’s Office says inmate Gray Hester was experiencing medical distress during a routine cell inspection Saturday night.

He was found unresponsive around 8pm. The detention medical team performed life-savings measures until EMS arrived, but Hester did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital…
