ASHEVILLE – People seeking to convert “nonconforming,” existing structures like sheds or garages, into an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, can now skip the previously required visit to the Board of Adjustment.
It could ease the path toward new, more affordable units in the city. It would also remove what appears to be a “layer of unnecessary and costly bureaucracy in neighborhood backyard housing,” according to a staff report.
