Sheriff’s office responds after DHS calls out Asheville leaders amid ICE detainer request

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has responded to a letter from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that cited previous statements regarding local enforcement of immigration law.

On Tuesday, Feb. 10, DHS issued a news release regarding Juan Ramon Juarez-Talamantes, who was arrested and charged with three counts of rape of a child under 15 years old.

In the release, the DHS claims that local politicians in Asheville previously stated they would not use county funds to enforce immigration laws, citing a News 13 article from November 2025. In that report, the BCSO said, “We cannot and will not use county resources to subsidize the enforcement of civil immigration violations.”…
