Buncombe County health officials address measles myths and urge vaccination

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — As North Carolina works to battle the spread of measles, health officials are working to battle measles myths, which were a big part of an online discussion on Wednesday with local doctors, including Buncombe County’s medical director.

One common misconception medical professionals said they’ve run into is that vitamin A helps prevent the virus. In reality, they say Vitamin A does not prevent viral infections like measles and is not a replacement for the MMR vaccine.

There’s also a difference between isolation and quarantine. Dr. Jennifer Mullendore, medical director for Buncombe County Health and Human Services, said if someone has a confirmed case, “don’t go anywhere until at least past the fourth day after their rash developed. So, on day five after their rash developed, they are considered released from isolation.”…
