WLOS receives Cardinal Award for news coverage during, after Helene

ASHEVILLE, NC. (WLOS) — WLOS was recognized by state officials for its efforts to inform and tell the stories of western North Carolinians during and after Helene. State Auditor Dave Boliek presented the station with the Cardinal Award on Feb. 27, 2026, for its news coverage during and in the wake of the storm, which devastated the mountains.

“From the earliest storm warnings through the historic flooding that inundated areas like Biltmore Village and the River Arts District, WLOS delivered timely, clear, and detailed coverage that helped residents understand the severity of the crisis and make informed decisions to protect their families,” Boliek said. “As rivers crested beyond historic highs and infrastructure failures mounted, their live reporting became a trusted source of critical safety information for communities across the region.”
