PHOTOS: Fiery tractor trailer crash on I-40 East melts asphalt, closes interstate

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — An early-morning crash on Interstate 40 East in Haywood County on March 5 resulted in a tractor trailer being engulfed in flames and caused the interstate to be closed due to debris and melted asphalt, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened just before 6 a.m. March 5 and involved just the tractor trailer, and that the driver made it out of the tractor trailer safely.

First Sgt. Jason Metcalf with the Highway Patrol said the accident was at mile marker 28.5 near Clyde. He said the driver was hauling rolls of wire which ended up falling all over the interstate…
