Get out of the Uber, walk down a narrow alleyway and take a right. Walk straight down a flight of stairs, take a left, walk down another flight, and you’ll find yourself in a low-lit basement room resembling a speak easy where you’d almost expect to see the ghosts of Al Capone, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Charles “Lucky” Luciano.
Instead of a ghostly sight, though, there’s a group of roughly three dozen people milling throughout the room, drinking beer, conversating, trading a few jokes, giggles and war stories. Tucked into the right side of the room, a few feet away from a stage, Danville Pittsylvania natives Gabriel Dalton, Caden Spaulding, Grayson Chattin and Evan Goodwin, along with their girlfriends and families, are talking amongst each other and the crowd.
A few minutes later, while ordering a beer, trying to convince the bartender you are really with the band, Dalton, Spaulding, Chattin and Goodwin step on stage. With one last tuning and final count, the quartet launches into the Grateful Dead’s “I Know You Rider,” officially kicking off the Billy Strings After Party Show at One World Brewing in downtown Asheville on Saturday, Feb. 14…
