Nonprofit plants butternut trees in western NC to restore the native landscape

HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Conserving Carolina is working to transform an abandoned golf course in Etowah back to its original state by reintroducing the butternut tree.

“Butternut was once common across the landscape; it’s got thousand cankers disease, it’s working towards extinction,” Torry Nergart with Conserving Carolina said. “We’re hoping these will be resilient against that disease.”
