Sanitation crews find litter, overgrowth at defunct Mountaineer Inn in Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Sanitation crews were at the Mountaineer Inn in Asheville on Tuesday to begin assessing how to clean up the property after officials deemed it a threat to public safety. A judge authorized the City of Asheville to enter the abandoned site.

At the site of the motel on Tunnel Road, crews documented litter and overgrowth throughout the property. A second team is expected to inspect the buildings for structural and safety concerns.

In February 2026, Buncombe County Superior Court Judge Alan Thornburg ordered Radify Asheville LLC, a now-defunct business entity, to clean up the Mountaineer Inn or face a potential lien to cover the bill for city staff to do it.
