WNC marks 33 years since the Blizzard of 1993 shut down the mountains

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — More than three decades after it struck the mountains, the Blizzard of 1993 remains one of the most significant winter storms in western North Carolina history.

The storm arrived overnight, March 12 into March 13, after rapidly strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico. As the system moved north into the Southeast, blizzard conditions developed across the Appalachians.

Snow totals climbed quickly across the mountains. Many communities received more than two feet of snow. Asheville Regional Airport measured 18 inches within 48 hours. That amount has not occurred there again since.

Higher elevations saw even greater snowfall. Mount Mitchell recorded 50 inches, while Mount LeConte in Tennessee received about five feet…
