Sharp temperature drop raises concerns for apple crops in Henderson County

HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — After several days of spring-like weather, a sharp drop in temperatures could threaten crops that have already started to bloom across western North Carolina.

At Barnwell Farms in Henderson County, some apple trees have already begun budding, a stage known as “green tips,” which farmers say are especially vulnerable to cold temperatures.

Western North Carolina started March with warm conditions, some days reaching into the 80s, but with two rounds of cold air moving into the region, temperatures dropped nearly 40 degrees within hours…
