Western Region Artists Bring Watercolor Mastery to Hendersonville Exhibition

The Watercolor Society of North Carolina’s (WSNC’s) 2026 Western Region Exhibition opens to the public on Friday, May 1, with a reception and awards ceremony from 5–7 p.m. at Art Place Gallery in Hendersonville. The show will be on display through Saturday, May 30.

As one of three regional groups within the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, the Western Region regularly organizes exhibitions, workshops and plein air events that welcome artists at all levels. This annual regional show mirrors the standards of the statewide juried exhibition while focusing specifically on local talent.

This year’s juror of awards, Patricia Morgan, brings decades of experience in watercolor painting and exhibition judging. “I have judged several shows in New York and New Jersey and always feel honored to be invited,” she says. “I agreed to jury this show as I have been painting in watercolors for over 20 years and truly enjoy viewing all of the wonderful entries by so many talented artists.”

Morgan emphasizes that strong composition is the foundation of successful work in the medium. “The first thing that always calls to me is the composition,” she says. “No matter how lovely the colors, drawing, subject matter, it only comes together with a well thought-out design. This includes the use of colors, brushstrokes, lost and found edges and lots of water. When those are done carefully, the artist is successful in telling their story.”…
