Volunteers needed for cleanup of historic cemetery: ‘This is how we maintain our history’

BAT CAVE, N.C. (WLOS) — A historic Henderson County cemetery hidden just off U.S. 64 is in need of volunteers after Helene left trees and debris covering nearly 100 graves.

The Edney Family Cemetery, located near the intersection of Chimney Rock Road and Edney Inn Road in Bat Cave, suffered major storm damage during Hurricane Helene. At least 10 trees fell into the cemetery, and officials said it remains unclear how many gravestones may be broken or destroyed until the site is cleared.

“Traffic passes it every day and doesn’t realize it’s here,” said Toby Linville, Henderson County’s floodplain administrator, who also staffs the Henderson County Cemetery Advisory Committee…
