Mission Hospital’s expansion plans in Buncombe County have hit a roadblock as two competing hospitals have appealed the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ decision to award it 95 new beds.
The appeals by AdventHealth and UNC Health, first reported by the Asheville Citizen Times, were filed April 23 in the Office of Administrative Hearings, an agency that rules on administrative law in contested cases.
The hospitals had competed for 129 beds earmarked for Buncombe, Graham, Madison and Yancey counties under the state’s 2025 State Medical Facilities Plan. Thirty-four were awarded to Asheville Medical Center, operated by Novant Health, for a new facility in Arden.
