Latest incident at MARTA station puts transit agency in spotlight just ahead of the World Cup

ATLANTA — Two stabbings, one of them deadly, and now a shooting have put safety and security firmly in the spotlight when it comes to riding MARTA. The transit agency’s police department continues to search for the man they said shot a 19-year-old man on the Midtown Station southbound platform.

MARTA Police Chief M. Scott Kreher said the shooting happened around 7 p.m. Friday, as an officer was patrolling station. The chief said the officer heard gunshots down on the platform, immediately rushed to the noise and found the victim.

“Both went down to the platform, and in the video evidence, you see the victim hesitate to get on the train and is looking down toward the suspect where he’s standing about two cars down,” Kreher said during a news conference Saturday afternoon. “They make eye contact with each other, he gets on the train and then the suspect comes up, pulls a firearm and shoots at the victim.”…
