Popular taco chain shuts down its only Georgia location

A fast-growing taco chain known for its bold flavors and cult following has officially exited Georgia less than two years after entering the market. The move comes as the national chain closed several other locations around the US.

Georgia loses its only Torchy’s Tacos

Torchy’s Tacos closed its West Midtown Atlanta restaurant in February, marking the end of the Texas-based chain’s short-lived run in Georgia. The location had opened in August 2024 inside the Star Metals development on Howell Mill Road and was the company’s first and only restaurant in the state.

Background of Torchy’s

Founded in Austin, Texas in 2006, Torchy’s Tacos has grown from a single food truck into a major fast-casual chain with roughly 120 locations across 16 states after the recent closures.

Despite the nationwide shutdowns, the company is still expanding in select regions and has stated it plans to continue opening new restaurants in high-performing markets over the next several years.

Part of a wider round of closures

The February closures affected restaurants in Georgia, Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Ohio. Torchy’s also closed several locations in 2025, including restaurants in Missouri and Virginia, as the company shifted focus toward stronger-performing markets.

A company spokesperson said the brand is prioritizing “sustainable growth” over rapid expansion and wants to invest more heavily in markets where sales and traffic are strongest.

Contributing factors for exit from Georgia

Torchy’s Tacos likely struggled in Georgia due to a combination of intense competition, high operating costs, and weaker-than-expected customer demand.
