Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Gerald Johnson has been named the National Sheriffs’ Association deputy sheriff of the year for valor, honored for stepping into a January 6, 2025 West End shootout that left him wounded and a robbery suspect dead.
According to Fulton Neighbor, Johnson was the sole recipient of the National Sheriffs’ Association’s Charles “Bud” Meeks Deputy Sheriff of the Year for Valor award, presented at the NSA summer conference in June 2026. The National Sheriffs’ Association notes that the honor recognizes extraordinary acts of heroism, spotlighting deputies whose split-second decisions save lives or protect the public.
How the West End shooting unfolded
On Jan. 6, 2025, Johnson was working an off-duty assignment when employees flagged him down after an armed robbery at a Krispy Kreme. He located the suspect behind an Easy Rental business on the 600 block of Lee Street in Atlanta’s West End. Investigators said the suspect opened fire with an assault-style rifle, and Johnson returned fire. He was struck in the hand before the suspect was pronounced dead, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Two store employees were also hit during the incidents and were treated, local reports show.
Sheriff Pat Labat praised Johnson in the aftermath, saying, “As we often do, he ran toward danger,” and adding that Johnson’s response likely saved lives, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Johnson was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a non-life-threatening hand injury and was later released, local coverage said.
