A Georgia man is accused of using a fraudulent digital coupon as part of a retail scheme that police say caused more than $200,000 in losses at stores across the country.
Malcolm Griffin presented a coupon on his phone that was supposed to provide 75 cents off a Summer’s Eve feminine care product, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. When the barcode was scanned at a Kroger in Peachtree City, Georgia, the checkout system instead deducted $50. Investigators say Griffin used the unauthorized discount while purchasing Visa gift cards.
Peachtree City police say Griffin regularly targeted retailers around metro Atlanta. Homeland Security officials later contacted local investigators and said he was wanted in connection with similar incidents stretching from Oregon to Maryland, while other local and federal agencies also remained interested in the case…
