February 4th was the 111th birthday of Rosa Parks. This daring woman, who refused to succumb to a white passenger, stood up against leaving her seat on the bus and caused the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This is the boycott that mobilized the civil rights movement. On December 1, 1955, Parks’ act of courage helped her to become an icon of the struggle against racial injustice.
In Atlanta this year, the city and MARTA dedicated a special commemorative art display at the Five Points station to the memory of Parks’ courage, which led to a wave that was felt worldwide. The exhibit acts as a reminder of how much ground we have covered in the years since Parks first took her given seat in the name of equality, and how much more there is left to cover. One small act set the stage for another generation to enjoy its benefits through a massive social change.
