Douglasville Mayor Rochelle Robinson recently visited Factory Shoals Middle School (FSMS) for a Black History Month event, ‘Story Time With the Mayor’. The event was organized by Media Specialist Katrina Barnett for eighth-grade students and a multi-level inclusion class. Robinson, the city’s first Black female mayor, read ‘There was A Party for Langston’ by Jason Reynolds.
The book, a tribute to Langston Hughes, was appreciated by the students. FSMS Principal Dr. Raymond Leonard thanked Mayor Robinson for her visit and for sharing her insights with the students. He stressed the value of such experiences in promoting understanding and appreciation for diversity within the school.
Dr. Leonard also commended Katrina Barnett for her efforts in organizing the event. He noted her dedication to literacy and Black History Month. The event was part of a larger initiative to engage students in activities that foster cultural understanding.
The book read by Mayor Robinson is about Langston Hughes, a renowned African American poet and social activist. Hughes is recognized for his work during the Harlem Renaissance and for breaking racial barriers in literature.
