The Lawrenceville Arts Commission has selected Leah Abucayan, a Filipino-American artist from Atlanta, Georgia, to create a ‘Welcome/Entrance Mural’ in Downtown Lawrenceville. The mural will be situated on Crogan Street, next to McCray’s Tavern on the Square, covering a large 800 sq. ft. The City Council approved the mural design on November 15, 2023.
Abucayan, a Graphic Design graduate from the Academy of Art University, currently works at the CNN Digital Art Department. She expressed enthusiasm for the project. Her portfolio includes murals, chalk art, digital design, product design, and book illustrations. Her design was selected for its inspiring nature and its representation of Lawrenceville without political or social bias.
The project, costing $25,000, covers the mural proposal, scissor lift rental, materials, and five years of maintenance. The Commission is dedicated to maintaining this important public art installation. The mural’s location offers a good viewing spot for passersby. The Commission also plans to enhance the sidewalk to allow the community to interact with the artwork.
