Braves veteran starter expected to retire following 2024 playoff ouster

The Atlanta Braves are headed home for the winter.

The team was swept in the National League Wild Card Series by the San Diego Padres, and their season came to an end on Wednesday night with a 5-4 loss in Game 2 at Petco Park.

This offseason, the Braves may be saying goodbye to a few players. Cody Williams of FanSided listed some players that may be on their way out.

Right-hander Charlie Morton was one of them, and Williams predicted that the veteran right-hander would ultimately retire.

“Morton, for the fourth time in as many seasons with the club, made 30 starts this season while posting a solid 4.19 ERA and a 1.325 WHIP. For a veteran expected to be a back-of-the-rotation innings-eater and steady presence, it doesn’t get much more ideal than exactly what he delivered to this Braves team,” Williams wrote. “All indications are this was the end of the line no matter what happened, so we’ve almost surely seen the last of Uncle Chuck in the battery.”

Morton will turn 41 years old this fall. He has been in the Major Leagues since 2008 and has pitched 17 seasons.
