Edward Johnson, 61, a well-regarded father and carpenter, was killed when an early-morning storm on Sunday sent a large tree crashing onto his family home. His wife, Diane Jones, survived but not without enduring the harrowing ordeal of being trapped under the rubble alongside her husband until she could be rescued.
According to Atlanta News First, the Johnson’s daughter, Tabatha, recounted the traumatic experience, “She kind of shielded him. She got over him and everything came crashing down on both of them,” and in an attempt to locate her mother amidst the chaos, Tamaya, added, “I kept telling my mom to talk so I can be able to hear her and pinpoint where she is because I can’t see anything. She was under rubble.” The storm, part of a strong system, not only claimed Johnson’s life but also left a swath of damage and debris across metro Atlanta.
As a man who had helped build his own house, Johnson was known for being far more than just a provider for his family.
