After layoffs and closures, these Atlanta restaurant owners are stepping up

ATLANTA — It wasn’t always clear that Ayman Kamel would one day be running restaurants. It wasn’t until his 20s that Kamel opened his first eatery—Napoli Pasta and Pizza in New York.

“We have a simple saying, people are your greater resources,” said Kamel, now the CEO of K5 Hospitality.

In 2015, Kamel moved to Atlanta. Since then, he’s opened several restaurants, including Five Church Midtown and Alta Toro. But as his footprint expanded, he watched others shrink—many shuttering during the pandemic’s peak and never recovering…
