Woman charged after daughter burned by boiling water in Austell apartment

Tanya Cook of Conyers is accused of failing to provide proper medical care to her 4-year-old daughter after she was severely burned by boiling water on Dec. 31 at 12:01 a.m. at an apartment at 2504 Cranbrook Circle SW in Austell, according to an arrest warrant from the Cobb County Police Department.

Cook was with her daughter getting her braids done at her niece’s apartment. At the end of the braiding process, the braids were being dipped into a kettle filled with boiling water. The kettle was sitting on a bar stool approximately 28 inches tall behind Cook. When Cook got up out of her chair, the chair knocked over the stool causing the boiling water to fall onto the girl, according to the warrant.

Cook and her niece removed the girl’s clothes and applied Vaseline to it. Cook stated she was scared to take the girl to the hospital out of fear they would think it was abuse. Cook stated she already had issues with the Department of Family and Children’s Services and did not want more. Cook admitted to the Conyers Police Department, DFCS and the arresting Cobb County Police officer that she was wrong for not taking the girl to the hospital, according to the warrant…
