Atlanta father jailed on manslaughter charge after boy, 3, drowns in Palm Bay hotel pool

A 40-year-old Atlanta man remains jailed without bond after Brevard prosecutors upgraded charges in the death of his 3-year-old son, who was found unresponsive in a Palm Bay hotel pool.

Sharef Omar Smith, who Palm Bay police said made obscene gestures to hotel staff and paramedics as rescue efforts were underway for the unresponsive child, appeared before a Brevard County judge on July 29 after the child was taken off life support, court records show. Smith, jailed at the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes, was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child in connection with the July 26 incident at the Quality Inn hotel on Palm Bay Road.
