Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat and several of his jailers failed to provide adequate medical care to an inmate who died after suffering from sepsis caused by a prolonged infection, according to a lawsuit filed by the inmate’s sister.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday by Christopher Smith’s family following his August 2023 death is the latest Labat and Fulton County have faced over the years relating to deaths at the troubled Rice Street jail.
According to the Smith family’s lawsuit, the sheriff’s office didn’t take adequate care of Smith as he suffered a “prolonged, untreated internal infection.”…
