Smyrna Pawn shop employee charged with jewelry theft

Billy Lee Sykes, 52, of Smyrna, is accused of taking jewelry from Smyrna Pawn, 630 Windy Hill Road, Smyrna, while an employee between Oct. 1, 2024 and Aug. 5, 2025, according to an arrest warrant from the Smyrna Police Department.

Sykes had been working for Smyrna Pawn since January 2003 and over that time, jewelry had started to go missing from the store.

Sykes was tasked with handling all jewelry in the store by the owner. On July 19, Sykes stated to a coworker that he had found $1,200 worth of jewelry in a bag and that it should go into his pocket. This led the employee to report it to the store owner. Upon further investigation, it was found that Sykes had pawned five items matching the description of items that had gone missing in the store to Silver Dollar Pawn, worth $4,549.97, according to the warrant…
