JONESBORO — The Calvary Refuge Center in Forest Park, Clayton County’s only homeless shelter, is on the verge of closing because of budget cuts and increasing demand and it recently requested $200,000 from the Clayton County Board of Commissioners.
At their Tuesday, Aug. 19 regular meeting, commissioners voted to table the request until its Sept. 16 meeting.
“If Calvary was to shut down, our already overwhelmed extended stays would be even more overwhelmed,” said Clayton County Democratic Committee Chair Drew Andrews during the public comments portion of the Aug. 19 meeting. “We have a shelter for stray animals; we only have one shelter for our neighbors. I don’t want our neighbors to feel that they are treated less than the stray animals that they see on the street.”…
