MARTA police chief: Crime is down on trains despite safety concerns

Concerns about crime on the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) remain an obstacle to getting some riders to return, but the agency’s police chief says the trains are safe — and getting safer.

During a news conference at the Chamblee rail station on Aug. 21, MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher said while he can’t promise Atlanta’s transit system will be crime-free, he can “promise that we have worked every day and employed every crime-fighting tool and training to try and mitigate and keep this from happening.”

According to Kreher, overall crime on MARTA is down 8% this year, and categories like aggravated assaults and robberies have fallen by double digits…
