Atlanta karate instructor shot in random attack shares harrowing story of survival

ATLANTA — An Atlanta martial arts instructor is recovering and speaking out after being shot in a random attack while driving home from a wedding last month. The shooting happened late Saturday, Sept. 20, on Hill Street SE in the Grant Park neighborhood. Atlanta police say no arrests have been made and the case remains under investigation.

John-Michael Dietz, 41, teaches others how to defend themselves, but he says nothing could have prepared him for the night a stranger pulled a gun and opened fire.

“I had made that left-hand turn onto Hill, and either something hit my car—the window shattered—or I hit a pothole or a curb I couldn’t see,” Dietz said, recounting the moment everything changed…
