Atlanta-based muralist George F. Baker III and associate artist Jaleel Wimbush put down their spray cans and paint markers after putting the finishing touches on a vibrant mural at Hub Athens Apartments on the afternoon of Oct. 17. Together with Secret Walls Campus Beautification Program and the paint company POSCA, the two completed the three day mural live before the Athens community, blending passion and paint in a spectacular celebration of urban artistry.
The colorful mural’s painting began on Oct. 14 and community engagement events associated with the artwork began the following day. These included a doodle session workshop at K.A. Artist Shop, community collaborations and a coffee meet-up at Walker’s Pub & Coffee.
The mural took just three days to complete, with the work visible to anyone passing by. Although the third day had relatively few visitors compared to previous days, Baker and Secret Walls CEO Kevin Collins expressed satisfaction with the turnout for the community events.
“My favorite part of making a mural is really the interaction,” Baker said. “I feel like [it’s] seeing how people come up here and [how] they’re just immediately engaged with what we’re doing, even at the early stages.”…
