Program helps keep Atlanta seniors in their homes amid rising cost of living

ATLANTA — Kathryn Copper steps out of the place she has called home for over thirty years. While new development has gone up around her, so have her property taxes.

New apartments, businesses and green spaces have drawn more people to Atlanta and driven up property values. They’ve also led Copper to wonder if she can continue living in the city.

“How about maybe five to six times higher than what it was when I first came here,” Copper said. “Nobody was around here. All of this stuff – Ponce City Market wasn’t here, the Beltline wasn’t here. For someone who loves their community and wants to live here for the rest of your life, it’s a drawback to have to be concerned about how much are the taxes going to go up this year?”…
