Man opens plane emergency exit, deploys inflatable slide, after allegedly spotting weapon

ATLANTA (WKRC) – A passenger “experiencing a mental health episode” opened the emergency exit on a flight as it was taxiing on a tarmac, deploying an inflatable slide, after he believed he saw a weapon on board.

According to a release from the Atlanta Police Department, a passenger aboard KLM Airlines Flight 622 set for Amsterdam called 911 to report another passenger that had a weapon. The passenger reportedly panicked and opened an emergency exit, deploying an inflatable slide, while the plane was still taxiing down the tarmac.

The plane immediately stopped and first responders determined that the passenger, 32-year-old Johannes Van Heertum, was “experiencing a mental health episode,” per the release. Police did not mention finding a weapon onboard the aircraft…
