Tensions between U.S. and Venezuela ripple into Georgia, impact local community

ATLANTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Ongoing tensions between the United States and Venezuela are having ripple effects in Georgia, including protests held in Atlanta over the weekend.

Gwinnett County is home to one of the largest Latino populations in the state, with a heavy concentration of Venezuelan-owned restaurants, businesses, and shops along the Northeast Corridor, including Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Since 2010, the Venezuelan-American population in Georgia has grown by more than 250 percent.

Political experts estimate nearly nine million Venezuelans have fled their country amid economic and political turmoil. About 700,000 now live in the United States under Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, which allows nationals from certain countries to remain in the U.S. due to unsafe conditions at home…
