Georgia House passed property tax overhaul

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Georgia state representatives have approved a wide-ranging property tax rewrite that would let counties and some cities offset homeowner property taxes with a new 1% local sales tax, while also tightening rules for when local governments and school districts can collect more property tax revenue without voter approval.

On Tuesday, the House approved the Homeownership Opportunity and Market Equalization Act of 2026, which creates a Local Homestead Option Sales Tax, or LHOST, designed to fund homestead exemptions adopted through local legislation and approved by voters.
