I Never Leave Atlanta Without Stopping At This Sandwich Shop

I make the drive from Birmingham to Atlanta often. It’s only about two hours long and a straight shot down I-20. Even for such a short ride, I need car snacks. And by snacks, I mean a whole sandwich, which is why Fred’s Meat & Bread is often my last stop before I hit the road.

The restaurant, from the great minds behind another local favorite of mine, The General Muir, punches way above its weight as a lean but mean stall inside Krog Street Market. It’s worth braving the crowds at the popular food hall to get a Cauliflower and Eggplant Bahn Mi or Chicken and Pepperoni Parm sandwich. It’s also worth every bit of mess I make in the car eating it on the way home.

Whether you’re just passing through Atlanta, or it’s your final destination, Fred’s is one place you must add to the itinerary.

What Makes Fred’s Meat & Bread Great

What I like most about Fred’s, aside from how consistently good it is, is that the menu is composed of familiar favorites done in a slightly different and exciting way. The Korean Cheesesteak is still dripping in American cheese, but is also kicked up with a spicy gochujang sauce and candied jalapeños. Although the more classic variation is great too, so much so, the Michelin Guide said, “Don’t tell Philly, but this iteration easily put many there to shame.”…
