AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Lucy Craft Laney Comprehensive High School is boosting security on campus after multiple fights, Principal Marvin Washington confirmed in a letter sent to parents Tuesday.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. To ensure ourschool remains a focused, secure, and supportive environment for learning, we are immediatelyimplementing several operational adjustments:
- Enhanced Law Enforcement Presence: We are increasing our School Resource Officer (SRO) presence during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal transitions. We moved from our standard two officers to three today, and we will have four officers on duty for transitions throughout the remainder of the week.
- Neighborhood Patrols: The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office will actively patrol thesurrounding neighborhood and perimeter of the campus during morning and afternoontransitions.
- Expanded Screening Support: We have requested an additional support staff member to assist with our morning metal detector and security entry procedures to ensure thorough, efficient screenings.
- Heightened Administrative Visibility: You will see an increased administrative presencethroughout our hallways and common areas all day.
- Staff Collaboration: Our administrative leadership team is meeting directly to review thesemeasures, evaluate daily procedures, and gather feedback as we continue refining our safety protocols.”
Parents again are being asked to speak with their children about their conduct at school.
“Please take time this evening to have a meaningful conversation with your child(ren) about behavior, expectations, and personal accountability,” the letter reads in part. “Help our students understand how individual choices affect our entire school community, the serious consequences of bringing prohibited items onto campus, and the importance of conducting themselves with pride and maturity. We must work together to reinforce that disruptive or unsafe behavior will not be tolerated at Laney.”…
